As a jobs skills educator for a Fortune 50 company, I understand the value of connecting people with quality jobs that pay a living wage. As your representative, I will actively pursue and encourage interest in business sites that have remained vacant for far too long. I will focus on developing green jobs by adopting city policies that encourages sustainable development.
Potential Job Sites
- Central and Lowry Avenues – Fire created an empty lot on this vital intersection that should have been quickly redeveloped. The city and county must stop preventing the owners from redeveloping.
- Shoreham Yards – Businesses are always looking for quality office space. The redevelopment of Shoreham Yards has been stagnant for decades. Shoreham Yards can be redeveloped and has the potential for at least 1500 quality jobs. In today’s business climate, we cannot afford to let jobs get away.
- Hollywood Theater – In other parts of the city, the city managed to bring together private businesses and public organizations to redevelop theaters. Hollywood must be given the same consideration.
- Dayton’s Warehouse – The north end of this site is a proposed site for a construction waste and household hazardous waste facility. A thorough review by the city and neighborhood organizations is necessary to assure that this is the best and appropriate use for this property.
Small Business Advocates
Small businesses should not be forced to hire high cost consultants to set-up shop in Minneapolis. We need to help small businesses develop on Johnson, Central, Marshall, University, and Como. My plan to hire Small Business Advocates to help small businesses navigate the complex will quickly bring more places for us to walk to, shop at, and make our neighborhoods more livable.
Citizens expect their elected representatives to lead, to be responsive and to think of the greater good. When Stinson Parkway was threatened with changes that would decrease traffic safety and remove green space and mature trees, I led the fight to preserve Stinson's character. The neighborhood is stronger than before and neighbors are now organizing the Stinson Parkway Conservancy.
Strong neighborhoods are places where families grow and people look forward to growing old. I will fight to make our neighborhoods stronger.
Transportation
Neighborhoods that have transportation choices that include biking, walking, and transit allow all residents to fully participate by working, shopping, and playing. I will fight to create an integrated multi-modal transportation model for Minneapolis.
- Integrate bike travel into core transportation
- Infrastructure that works including re-opening Broadway at 280
- Transit that is consistent and reliable
- Pedestrian scale lighting and development
Energy and Environment
Northeast is home to the first LEED certified home built in Minneapolis. Minneapolis must lead in investing in more efficient uses of energy. I will work to give incentives for building green, using local labor, and conserving energy.
- Give neighbors and developers incentives through codes and property tax credits for green development
- Implement efficient street lighting.
- Aggressively install rain gardens to reduce strain on storm water system
- Continued monitoring of contaminated sites
- Create revolving loan program to fund green remodeling
Neighborhood Groups
Neighbors have a right to control their destiny and to expect their elected representatives to champion issues that affect their lives. I will represent my neighborhoods’ priorities.
- Empower neighbors to create development plans for their communities
- Remove layer of bureaucracy city added in 2008
- Ensure neighbors and neighborhoods know about development in their neighborhoods
